RE:"Investments in certain R&D programs can have great rates of return. The space program is a great example of that."

Obama is investing in the space program? For some reason I don't think high tech R&D is on his radar screen.

Unless, of course, you ascribe to Tim's theory that when taxes are levied, the government eats the money.

I do, pretty much. It isn't a "theory", however -- it is something we've watched happen for decades.

Investment in infrastructure is something governments do quite well.

I have no problem with investment in infrastructure. That is sometimes a true "investment".

But Obama wants to "invest" in "health care". That's consumption spending. He wants to "invest" in "education". Consumption. "Science"? Consumption.

Now, he has said he wants to "invest" in broadband lines to rural homes. You think that's a "good investment"? I would think you know that it is stupid for the government to get involved in that business, and even were it not, it would be a stupid "investment" anyway because it is antiquated technology. But let's face it, if it isn't about getting a return, it isn't an investment.

They talk about "investing" in "transitional jobs". WFT? Career pathway programs? "Investing in communities"? Dude, that's right out of 1984. This isn't investing. This is government giveaways which will serve to reduce productivity.
