Marxists borrowed from Hegel the idea that philosophy can be "scientific". They believe that their view of history and direction of progress are "scientifically" proven. In effect, they think that their view is infallible. From their POV, to relinquish political power is absurd - it simply makes no sense, since they see themselves as being on the cutting edge of history. A river does not flow backwards. Therefore, once they capture political power, they'll do whatever it takes to keep it.

It's possible that this view is outdated - this is the old style Leninist way of "doing business". However, the main idea probably has not changed.
