Under provisions of Minnesota law each major party is permitted one poll challenger per polling place. By law, Poll Challengers are allowed to be present at polls during voting hours and remain until votes are counted and results declared.

The role of a Poll Challenger is to observe, deter, and challenge.

Observe: illegal electioneering, ballot security, ballot box security, proper functioning of Opti-Scan, voter behavior, voter turnout, any disenfranchisement while polling place is down or closed, suspicious activity.

Deter: ineligible voters from trying to vote and those who want to commit voter fraud.
