It's an interesting point in time because right now, the economic dislocation is rebounding on the Republicans who were running Washington and Wall Street. The effort to vent that anger at the Evil Alien Other Democratic candidate didn't work well enough to win an election (it appears right now). Part of the post-election tussle within the Republican Party will be between the folks who want to stoke the culture wars more as a useful distraction, and those who seek to address the same groups with real economic policy meat. Another important point - if there is an Obama victory map and it has fingers reaching well down into the south and the west, the notion that there is a contiguous "red America" may go by the wayside too.
