What?

You are still stating your opinion and passing it off as fact. The price we pay for society depends upon your definition of society. That is why I asked if you want to reduce all government to the point of preventing collapse. The answer to that appears to be yes even if you won't admit it.

So I will assume that you want to have only the police (including military) structures in place to prevent other countries from attacking us and from us attacking each other. Beyond that, what is your definition of preventing societal collapse?

I suspect that a piece of the government's involvement or interference with agriculture is to prevent huge swings in booms and busts that are inevitable in the industry. The 'market' doesn't care about the effects of big ups and downs in production and prices but human beings do. I don't know if some subsidies work sometimes while not at others or with some products and not with others.

We could, after all, have let all the banks fail which was the market solution to the problem of CDOs. We could ignore short selling and not have breaks on big down swings in the market.

I don't think that letting 'the market' completely dictate our lives is a particularly good thing because we value stability. Reduction of some downside risk and the ability to see a little bit into the future in return for reduction in some upside is a good thing for most people except for adrenaline junkies. I don't know if this is the situation with milk or if that is simply a problem with corruption.

Prove that progressive taxation discourages wealth creation.
