Sure, but this is also reality: 1) There have been spectacular examples of failure, or more correctly, outright fraud in industry funded research. 2) There is a very well known and well documented movement specifically aimed at producing industry funded research with results that industry likes. True, the above has tended to play in areas which have ideological contention. The example you cited is a domain of research which does not seem to have that factor. So you need to take that into account. Look at industry funded research in areas that impact industry friendly ideology, and see if the results hold.
