National Geographic's current issue has an entire article about light pollution.

I have to say that light pollution is one reason I favor the country over the city environment. I'm not one for government regulation of commerce in the city, but sometimes I wish self restraint would be exercised by some of these people with the flashing light billboards. They are very annoying and distracting to drivers along the freeway. I-5 near Seattle is unbearable that way.

Anyone who has not seen the northern lights has a treat in store and should put it on their list of things to do before they die. I've seen them in Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. You can't see them if there is a lot of light pollution; even bright moonlight keeps them out of sight. But then full moonlight has its own beauty.
