But when you get down to it, instinct is often quite rational. For example, people fall in love (without knowing they do) based on smell- and their body does this to them, because the body is programmed to look for genetic pairings that make optimal genetic "sense". So, I think the level below the consciousness may just be the most rational level of all- because it is without emotion, even though it may stimulate emotion in us to get what it wants. It is all about fitness and survival- two of the most rational goals an organism and species can have, I'm sure you'd agree.
