LB,

Incidentally, "Lp(a)," the hereditary Lipoprotein that causes heart disease, the one that is the most difficult to treat, is typically found in people who are the thin, wiry type that engage in marathons.

Another issue with extreme endurance type sports, like running marathon, is that exercise results in some inflammation. Moderate inflammation as a result of moderate exercise is fine, and body is designed to deal with this just fine.

When someone engages in extreme exercise, such as running marathon, and training for it, that person puts his body at constant inflammatory assault.

As with everything else, moderation is the key. IMO, the types of activities like long distance running are not healthy at all.
