Wind and solar aren't evenly distributed. There's wide variation across the US. The generation of power from these sources needs to be where the wind and sun is strong and reliable. Which often (usually) isn't where people live. So lots of transmission is needed.

That's pretty much what I said.

good point. wind won't work in neighborhoods, for example..
