Fond memories of 1980

I am having dinner with some close friends tonight. Normally, this argumentative group would exhibit divided loyalties, but this year is an exception. I will be the only one present who voted for McCain. I expect to be served up for dessert.

In 1980, one of my friends was on the path to becoming a Jesuit. He was living in the Jesuit residence at Loyola University in Chicago. I was invited to dinner at the residence on election night, and as I ate my meal, I absorbed a lot of abuse from the entire Jesuit community because of for my support of Reagan. After dinner we sat down to watch the returns. Everyone was in high spirits because they expected Carter to triumph over the troglodyte. As Reagan gained traction, I heard a lot of comments about the “stupidity” of the American people. Eventually, the room became very quiet. I remained mute. Needless to say, it was a most enjoyable evening. I was never invited back and my friend eventually went back to civilian life.

Unfortunately, I don’t expect to repeat my 1980 experience this evening.
