Charlie,

I view your reply as a corroboration of my own, so we're not far from one another on this one. Perhaps the BOCs themselves are hoping they will be saved by yet another network architectural shift within the framework of a copper based revolution, but it is unlikely. It could be caused by their own harnessing of VoIP through the use of DSP technology in their own DSLAMs, for example, as a means of taking advantage of what might otherwise devour their breakfast, lunch and dinner. Who knows? Not likely, but who knows?

Having seen the logistics and the accounting considerations behind the decisions that they have to make, not to mention the field-related issues concerning powering the local loop, reliability, and the uniformity of delivery across a broad base of not-so-uniform outside plant, I sometimes tend to give them some slack with regard to these decisions.

Maybe this is a rationalization for the argument for dissolution of the greater entities (the large LECs), because smaller ones (CLECs, ITSPs, ISPs) would be left to decide on the merits of much smaller cross-sections of users and physical constraints? Toffler speaks to this issue indirectly when he speaks about the fragmentation and diffusion of industry and businesses as we move into the wave.

Regards, Frank
