Its a simplistic generalization to take any case where all you know is that some individual has a lot of money, and assume that he produces a lot.

But when you move away from the individual level and look at the big picture its an accurate representation of the overall reality. There are of course exceptions, including some quite visible and obvious exceptions, but in general people who make more do so because they produce more.
