ie: the gutting of the manufacturing base Not in this country. At least until the recent slowdown, we produced more manufactured goods every decade, and almost every year, than the decade or year before. Of course we did so with less manufacturing employees, but producing more with less is another way to say "higher productivity". And higher productivity is the only real way to improve the long term per capita wealth in society. A little known fact. Even before the current world wide slowdown, China has also been "losing manufacturing jobs". That's because they are also increasing their productivity and producing more with less.
