I think Obama's landslide election will ultimately shatter the Republican Party, and I see at least three major parties competing in the '12 elections as a consequence.

Here's why.

1) Moderates (educated business folk/doctors, etc.) will want to tap into the center-right of Democrats in order to help rebuild the GOP.

2) Rightwing extremists (talk radio heads/evanglicals/NRAers, et. al.) won't have anything to do any attempt to cross into the DEM asile and giving up any of the issues dear to them.

3) The extremists will form this party early on, especially as more and more Obama decisions don't go their way, and they perceive that moderate Republicans seemingly are doing little to impede Obama's thrust.

4) The far-left will exert all the pressure it can in order to move Obama in that direction. Obama will be hesitant to comply and many on the left will begin scratching their heads--much like they did when Clinton got elected. Nader will be monitoring much of this and will likely start grabbing press. As a critic to the left of Obama the media will provide Nader new traction.

I think the above scenario is quite possible, so we'll spend some time here on SI observing this as it plays out. All comments on this thread are welcome.
