LOL. I'm not mincing words. From 2004 to now, I was not proud of my country under Bush. He made us a laughingstock, destroyed our credibility around the world, and destroyed our economy. Then when it looked like so many Americans supported McCain, I began to wonder exactly how corrupt the American soul had become. But with this resounding victory, I realize that McCain's popularity was not as high as they made it out to be. As such, I am again proud to be an American, because I believe the majority in this country feel the way I do.

Being patriotic is having the courage to tell it like it is when your country's leaders do bad things. Are you proud of your son when he commits a despicable act? I can say I wouldn't be. Same with our country. You don't have to be proud of your country every single day to remain a patriot every second of every day. The true patriots are unrelenting critics as well as steadfast loyalists.

>>gg> For the first time in my adult lifetime, or for so long I can't remember, I'm really proud of my country. It's another level of pride. Not that I didn't think I was proud before; I just didn't know what was possible.<<

I think we all feel like that SR.

Yes. I broke down and sobbed during Obama's speech. I don't do that easily. I am so happy.

This country is a great country, but the radical far-right Republican administration of the past 8 years almost turned it into a banana republic.

I vividly remember 1979, when I still lived in England and Maggie Thatcher was elected for the first time. I was totally elated then, because I'm a centrist. Radical far-left governments had almost destroyed England. Thatcher turned that around and saved the country.

My feelings now are a lot similar, but more so because the health of America is important to the whole world.
