The voters of California Wednesday rejected Proposition 10, which sought to provide rebates for consumers who purchase fuel-efficient cars and cars that run on natural gas, according to the Los Angeles Times' Web site.
With 63.4% of the vote counted, 61.2% had voted "no," compared to 38.8% for "yes."
Proposition 10 was backed by billionaire Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens, whose company, Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (CLNE), which sells compressed natural gas for vehicles, stood to gain if initiative passed. The Seal Beach, Calif. company has contributed $18.75 million to the "Yes on 10" campaign.
Passage of the initiative would have been a big step forward for the "Pickens Plan," a proposal to wean the U.S. off of foreign oil by boosting use of domestic natural gas in vehicles and wind generation for electricity.
Environmental groups, the California Chamber of Commerce, and the head of the California Air Resources Board opposed Proposition 10, saying there are more effective and cheaper ways to cut greenhouse-gas emissions.
