Correct, that isn't how he ran. He did exactly what that article said he did.

" You start with the base, you expand it as much as possible by increasing turnout, and then you work outward until you get past 50% - but you don't compromise more than necessary to get to that goal."

Which would make Obama "Rovian" vs "Beltway Pundit[ian]," as the duality was framed in the article.

I don't see what your issue with that could be.

Obama wasn't aiming for 50.1%. He was aiming for 53-55%.

Bush also aimed for 53+% as did his opponents, its just that none of them reached those levels.

Also, those are pretty close percentages. I don't see the distinction as very useful.
