I wish I had 100 years of experience to reflect upon but since I don't I'll have to work with 42. I've posted to and spoken with a number of people that I've said the current situation "feels" like the mid to late 70's. Based on that I replied to an email from a concerned friend who was upset about last night. My response was this -

Minus a perfect start and a complete 180 degree turn in our economy (which isn't going to happen) the Republicans will take back the Oval office in 2012/ January 20th of 2013. The landscape will change for a while until people realize that Obama and his policies aren't the answer. Once that happens we'll see a return to 1979 in terms of:

1) Financial issues
2) Energy issues
3) Unemployment
4) higher interest rates
5) Zero pride in America
6) A weak military............the list could go on and on

So while I'm not pleased with the outcome I REALLY don't believe this is the end of our country as we know it. It's certainly a shift in where the pendulum is but at the end of the day any major changes will either be staved off or reversed as Obama's administration fails. There are just too many pre-existing issues for him to tackle. As a result he'll be forced to scale back (or abandon altogether) his socialist agenda just to be able address the current situation. Since he lacks the experience, I think the mistake he'll make is to try and do everything AND impose his societal changes. The outcome will be a failure and another pendulum shift in 4 years.

That's just my guess - He's another Jimmy Carter. No practical experience and when things don't improve quickly under his watch he'll lose power, his own party will be scrambling to distance themselves from him and he'll find himself on a political island named LAME DUCK.
