Yes. But if you invent something that is vitally needed, say a cure for cancer, what is the optimal time that society should grant you a monopoly on this wonderful drug? And during the life of this patent, should you be able to charge whatever you want for it, even if the profit maximization formula for the firm results in a market price that puts it beyond the reach of many?

Society needs to give people an incentive to create things, but it also needs to limit monopolies. What is the "correct policy"?
