Re: "You could also make a case for the market rally into election day on McCain closing the gap in the polls...."

I suppose I could TRY to make an argument such as that, but I believe that the actual odds lines posted on the betting sites might be sufficient to kill off that line of argument.

(There might also be that little nagging reminder that - aside for some to-be-expected and 'natural' reduction of 'undecideds' in the last days - there really was very little "tightening" in the national polls to point to during the last month of the race. The polls remained pretty consistent during that period. The period of McCain's ascendants in the national polls was during and immediately after the GOP's convention. NOT during the last month of the race.)

Re: One year out will be interesting to say the least."

Yes.

I believe that one must have a sufficiently long baseline to be able to draw any useful conclusions. Any one day number is just subject to static....

Re: "His hands will be tied pretty tight as to what he can do, given the current situation."

ABSOLUTELY!

With the Bush-legacy national deficit to be posted FY2009 somewhere in the neighborhood of ONE TRILLION DOLLARS, and the economy proceeding into a deep freeze all around the world... not to mention the continued strain of two wars ongoing, there is next to no possibility of EITHER significant increases to the level of taxation in the US, or significant systemic increases to the level of government spending.

The cupboard is empty.

Re: "I would not want to be him. But i hope he can pull a rabbit out of his hat."

As do I, and most Americans.
