Yeah, as a state legislator, when it wouldn't really matter if he were wrong.

Giving that speech at that time was a pretty good risk/reward. If the war had gone as the Neo-cons were imagining and was over in 6 months with Chalabi "installed" in a new "U.S. leaning democracy" then he would probably have just stuck around the legislature for a few more years until a House seat came up that he could win.

If the Iraq War went BAD, then he'd have a "platform" to run from to higher office.

When the "surge" came up he just went along with the Party Line.

I'm not knocking Obama for doing this stuff because politics in the U.S. "requires" cynicism if your going to get yourself elected. I'm sure that when McCain had to "hug" Bush and make up with all the religious fundamentalists he was thinking exactly the same thing.
