More pragmaticly speaking, the ideas proposed will be designed in a way to get the republicans to go along - not a bad idea in these times.

I suspect it will be more nuanced than that. They'll be written to reflect (a) whether it gets the job done--something that seems to be first order business for Obama, and (b) whether they can pick off a few Reps without damaging the proposed legislation. Snowe and Collins leap to mind; most likely Spector will be on that list as well.

I could change my mind on this, but right now I'm inclined to hope for a filibuster proof Senate. There are important and urgent things to be done. I don't think I want them watered down or compromised away. The way bills get loaded up with unrelated stuff to attract votes just drives me nuts.

At the same time, I share your concern for checks and balances sooooooooooo I'm somewhat conflicted. It's just that the country needs, I think, some clear and decisive legislation, for ex. in the area of regulation....black and white rules, not a bunch of murky rules that allow for wiggle room.
