Of Bush's 2004 states, Obama captured Virginia, Florida and North Carolina in the South, Ohio, Indiana and Iowa in the Midwest and Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico in the West.

Looking back, I see that VA, NC and IN haven't been blue in many elections. That is truly redrawing the electoral map and going beyond a simple Rovian strategy of playing to your base states.
