"Not a golden age" isn't very meaningful.

Also the 50s where a pretty good period for the rich even with the high marginal tax rates. Generally periods of economic growth are relatively good for the rich. The new money isn't going to be spread equally, some will get more than others. Those getting a big share (even if they where not rich beforehand) are now the rich.

But bad economic times tend to be good for "equality", everyone is more equally miserable.
