Your relying on anecdote, and I'm relying on statistics.

Anecdotes will get you a lot more detail, but they often don't reflect the overall reality well. Statistics can be, and often are imperfect but they are more relevant to the type of question we are talking about.

Things may have been more equal in the 50s, but the overall additional wealth was so much greater that the wealthy where also wealthier by any normal measure except perhaps their fraction of the total wealth or total income.
