Because the Feds can step in to make sure the regulations affecting elections were fair. But, what the USSC didn't just make sure that regulations were fair. Which is at the heart of your arguments. What they did was to stop a state's from following its documented procedures for ensuring a fair election. And, they knew it. Which is why they added the part about the decision was restricted to only that case and could set no legal precedent. The only reason for doing that is they were overstepping and didn't want to be dragged into future cases.
