to be fair though, I really do wonder how families making less than 100K get by in So Cal. We drive older cars (nice ones, but not new), we don't eat out much, and we try to watch what we spend, but we still can't save as much as we'd like.

I know a guy who is a partner in a law firm, with a nice but not ridiculous house in Pacific Palisades, who said that if he lost his job he'd have no money to pay the mortgage in 2-3 months. He has virtually no savings, and plans to retire via his inheritance, whenever that should arrive.

I guess my wife and I chose the wrong parents ...
