It's a pretty ugly illustration of basic human nature (and a reason why I am generally against any form of forced altruism). We have a situation where we could make quite a bunch of people happy, and which costs us nothing, and how do we respond? "NO!!!!!!!" You could pick a pool of random 5 year olds and they would show more decency than that. It's the kind of thing that turns people into misanthropes.
