In terms of making any particular segment of the population happier or more confident, it was more than unnecessary, it was actively harmful. It raised anxiety and hatred levels roughly between urban and rural, and generally polarized our politics much more than before. But the figurative and literal preachers of division will use Obama as a new wedge to try to deepen the divisions in their remaining flock.
