In terms of making any particular segment of the population happier or more confident, it was more than unnecessary, it was actively harmful. It raised anxiety and hatred levels roughly between urban and rural, and generally polarized our politics much more than before.

If you look at the shrinking map of contiguous red states in the 2008 election, it's a portrait of insular people retreating further into seclusion. Only 4 of the 22 states McCain won have 10 electoral votes or more.

I hope that the upcoming administration will coax at least some of those folks out of that cocoon and back into a modern country they can feel comfortable in.

But the figurative and literal preachers of division will use Obama as a new wedge to try to deepen the divisions in their remaining flock.
