Very necessary? Not from the war itself at least. LBJ also expanded spending in other areas.

As for the war in Iraq spending for it was about 1 percent of GDP. That's not the level of expense that should generally drive overall tax policy, and it was only a small part of the spending that collectively lead to increased debt.

In both cases (particularly in Iraq, but also in every war since WWII) the taxes and the debt primarily went to things besides the war.
