None of those cases are relevant. I didn't say responsible action in general is impossible, or that raising taxes is impossible, or that balancing budgets is impossible, or that reigning in inflation with tight money is impossible. What was impossible, at least during the years Bush was in office, was to eliminate the mortgage interest deduction, or start charging most homeowners a lot of capital gains taxes when they sold their homes. The whole political establishment in both parties was all about expanding home ownership.
