My impression of Joe, whatever else one thinks of him, is that he is/was smart. However, he's not acting that way right now. That last quote, threatening to bolt if he can't keep the Homeland Security position, is certainly counter productive. Makes it much harder to work out an acceptable compromise.

Definitely not smart.

I agree that his experience in the Rep caucus. But I suspect he's not been comfortable in the Dem caucus for sometime as well. Anytime Iraq came up or the Dem nominating process, he had to be terribly uncomfortable.
