am trying very hard, but I just can't get beyond understanding your view to allowing it to punish a group to satisfy your religious based definition. It just doesn't do personal harm to you that I can see.

I apologize for my absence. I tossed out a comment that was sure to incite responses, and then my cable went out for several hours. There are Cox trucks all over my neighborhood trying to figure out why all of us are having intermittent losses of connection. Right now I'm back on, and will try to make some kind of response.

I read the entire thread, and appreciate all the logical, rational arguments presented. There was nothing new that I haven't heard and carefully considered before now. The problem is that we will always be talking past each other because my world view does have that religious component in it. Right or wrong, it will always shape my final decision on something. And I often evaluate moral issues and reach my own conclusion based on whether or not that activity or behavior would advance the human race if EVERYONE engaged in it.

I say this because the conversation began with Prop 8. Had I been a resident of CA, I would have been facing a yes or no situation. Depending on the way I vote, I'm either saying I approve or disapprove of a certain behavior. So while I don't want people to be hurt or feel excluded, I'm not going to hurt myself by voting in a way that legitimizes that behavior.....a behavior I wouldn't want for myself or for my children and that wouldn't advance the human race. I suppose I could choose to just not vote...but that to me is a copout. I think a person should always vote even when the choice is difficult and they should vote in accordance with their own belief system. I don't know any other way to do it. But to vote otherwise, out of concern for the hurt it might bring to someone else, would then be a hurt to myself.
