There is still no law that makes anyone personally invite black people to their family barbecue and I'm sure some people never will.

But it's illegal to set up a neighborhood where black people can't live next door and stand a few feet away at their fence while you have your BBQ.

The premise is the same for gay marriage. One's "freedom" to uphold a tradition can't impinge on others if it restricts the other group's ability to enjoy equal rights. It's pretty simple when the equal protection clause is actually applied.
