Yes, interesting. Our relationship with animals, particularly domestic animals, is paternalistic. The relationship between husband and wife has traditionally been paternalistic. I would assume the word derives from that--"husbandry" rather than "paternalry."

Of course, then there's the curiosity of "paternalistic" rather than, say, "parentalistic"...
