Koan;

If this was an argument about a person's right to marry their pet
would the state have the right to deny them this?

<DAK, because not allowing gay marriage is a symbol of intolerance>

OK... but "symbols" are in the mind of the beholder.... the confederate flag is meaningless to a chinese guy... but to some people it is also a symbol of intolerance.. to change the meaning of the symbol "marriage" in society clearly will take time. Changing the meaning of ANY symbol takes time... Inability to recognize that fact may also show intolerance.

These are just words like "liberal" and "conservative" which change slowly over time. Folks getting upset because a given word's meaning isn't changing fast enough are just wasting their time is my point. Maybe cause I think the word "marriage" is sort of old fashioned anyway and I also dislike a lot of what it stands for...the "rules of marriage" that the churches gave it, etc... in fact I think the word sucks to be honest. LOL

People I know (heterosexuals) in parts of Canada in fact have a sort of "identity" by being "partners" instead of ever getting "married"... gives them a sort of "alternative" identity I think. Kind of cool.

To each their own.
