You're right about all this EXCEPT (presently) legally marriage is a a "right" left to the states to regulate and not one of the fundamental rights protected by the Federal Constitution. So this means that each state would have to address this. Alright, since I'm not supposed to take it easy on you. I say again. Can the state prevent me from marrying the pet I love? (And don't just say the argument's absurd which is to avoid it--address, if you would, how this differs, then what you are asking the state to do)
