Well, I don't want it coming from the schools, either. I have never been in favor of the schools being responsible for anything beyond providing a good basic education.
I disagreed with all the formal emphasis on self-esteem (can't fail people!), and with the over-emphasis on sports, although by your definition, these are actually very helpful as they teach discipline and commitment and keep kids busy. Luckily they are voluntary, at least.
We created responsible people without all this extra stuff "back in the day"- Mostly because our teachers expected us to work hard and respect them and the system. I am astounded at what kids say and do these days in school. That they sit and text while in a classroom and that parents write notes claiming they need to be able to contact their child is just ridiculous.

Then we have the underclass-- the one you and I discuss a lot. It will take more than forcing them to volunteer when their own lives are barely manageable.

I still think that the Harlem Project is the ideal and would rather see that put in place-- with early intervention and a lot of parental involvement.
