That's where theocracies really fall down; there can be no respect for other religious or secular views, because the Others become a threat to the power of the state too. You can't allow the "deviants" to exist and maintain the image that the ruling theology is still in power.

It's such an antiquated, anachronistic way of thinking, it's amazing it still exists as much as it does in modern western society.

It sounds like you were poorly taught by your particular church and never connected with God. There's tremendous variation in how churches lead and nurture their congregations.

I would also run away from anything that made me feel guilty and oppressed.

I also wish they would show the same respect.

Is this directed at me? Have I shown disrespect for you choosing a non-religious life? Or are you speaking in general.
