Obama apologizes to Nancy Reagan for 'seance' crack 5 hours ago CHICAGO (AFP) — Barack Obama's first press conference as US president-elect came with an apology attached Friday, as he phoned former first lady Nancy Reagan seeking forgiveness over a "careless" crack about her conducting seances. "President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan today to apologize for the careless and off-handed remark he made during today's press conference," Obama transition team spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said in a statement a few hours after the briefing. "The president-elect expressed his admiration and affection for Mrs. Reagan that so many Americans share, and they had a warm conversation," she said. Obama, known for his gift of oratory on the campaign trail, seemed out of character when he made the gaffe at his first press conference since winning the presidency, after he was asked if he had spoken with any former living presidents to prepare for the job. "In terms of speaking to former presidents, I've spoken to all of them that are living," said Obama. He then went on to name a dead president, Abraham Lincoln, as an inspiration. "Obviously, president Clinton -- I didn't want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances. I have re-read some of Lincoln's writings, who's always an extraordinary inspiration." Ronald Reagan was president from 1981 to 1989, and died in 2004. There have been no substantiated reports that actual seances occurred in the White House during the Reagan administration. But controversy erupted in 1988 when the president's former chief of staff Donald Regan revealed in his memoir, "For the Record," that Nancy Reagan, now 87, had regularly consulted an astrologer during the 1980s after the president was wounded in an assassination attempt. Actual seances in the White House are believed to have occurred during Abraham Lincoln's presidency, when first lady Mary Todd Lincoln held occult gatherings in an attempt to communicate with the dead, including the Lincolns' son Willie.
