But experience has shown that so many of these "destructive" issues based on bigotry turned out to be toothless in reality and in truth made us stronger for our acceptance of them.

For me this issue goes even farther than that, when I think about it.

Every citizen of the United States has a Constitutionally guaranteed right to choose NOT to progress spiritually, especially with respect to any one religion's idea of spiritual progress. It's none of my damn business whether anyone else meditates or not, or whether they pray, or whether they engage in behaviors I think will stunt their spiritual growth.

Unless the First Amendment is repealed, I will defend every American's right to practice his or her religion in any way he or she sees fit, including not practicing it at all. Of course, I will also resist any efforts to repeal the Amendment.
