But we chose it.

The upshot of this is that social authoritarians don't respect the right of others to choose; they want to dictate behaviors and outcomes.

And that in the land of freedom and liberty, the USA.

Oh,Kate, surely you see the problem with this view!!! Who are you, or anyone, to force families into certain behaviors you happen to think are best?

I'll ask you the same thing I asked Lane. Why such a heated response? You are the third or fourth person that has accused me of wanting to force behaviors on people. I think the fact that religion is part of the conversation is causing you and some others to overreact.

As I asked Lane, if I expressed the notion that maybe families were better off back when more women stayed home to raise the children and volunteer in schools and communities, would you assume I would, if I had that power, force women to do that? Would you say 'who are you' to think you know what's best for for families, or would you just casually agree, disagree, or pleasantly say 'well, that's something to think about, isn't it'.

I really am curious. I express my views and wishes about a lot of things....the oil markets, the Paulsen plan, single-payer health insurance, tax policy....and no one ever asks me who the heck I think I am or accuses me of wanting to 'force' everybody else to see it my way.
