Wars and oppression make people behave in certain ways - you can still experience the aftermath of WW2 all over Europe just by interacting with people.

Most Russians don't know what happens outside Russia, and when they see a western movie, they interpret it a lot differently than other people. In many ways, old soviet countries work like west European countries in year 1900 AD - unlike non-soviet east european countries like Poland, Hungary etc., that did not have communism for the same amount of years.
