Suma, I'm very open and interested in all scientific study of sexual orientation issues. My guess is that the Mormon church would be, too. We've always been a church that charted its own course....adding to and subtracting from traditional theology...and historically the church has changed it's position on many issues of the day. The church hierarchy exists of a president, two counselors, and a council of twelve (as in the twelve apostles). Among their duties is to retreat and prayerfully consider proposed changes to church doctrine. We reject that notion that God spoke only once to man 2000 years ago, and we're now supposed to make do with a Bible that went through numerous historical changes and ended with a vote on what to include and exclude.

I also know that the Mormon church has long wrestled with the issue of homosexuality. I know the body-elect of the church want to do the right thing.....I mean why wouldn't they? There's no joy in excluding and demeaning people and violates about a gazillion scriptures to boot.

I presume you read my explanation for why I would vote for Prop 8? I want to say though, that since then I read the entire thread from yesterday and came across your post about some of the groups behind it and some of the rhetoric, etc. It really stabbed through me.....ugly, ugly stuff. If I had been a resident of CA and totally informed about everything before I voted, I honestly don't know how or even if I would have voted. I wouldn't want to be aligned with that kind of sentiment.

Two last things. Concerning the orgin of homosexuality, i.e. born that way, some would say if I'm born that way and God made me, then God must want me this way. The problem is that people are born with lots of things....diseases, congenital and mental defects, personality traits....that they and their families must deal with, always trying to advance beyond these inherent limitations.

if I asked you to be a homosexual and gave you counseling to be one do you think you really could change ? I don't know. What I do know, though, is that I've personally seen scores of people make amazing and dramatic changes in terms of overcoming obstacles. The kind you see in TV movies. Converts to the church who take a spiritual retreat and in two days turn away from 20-30 years of substance abuse and with no withdrawal or side effects. Slow learner dropouts that become college professors. I could talk for hours on this. Some too complicated to post but that almost defy known scientific or medical reality....at least to my understanding.

The other thing is that I trust completely that everything is sorted out in the end. If there really is God and our lives continue after death, the truth of things is made known and everything works out as it should.

Also, Prop 8 has really piqued my curiosity. One thing I want to know is exactly what kind of involvement my Church had out there. Individual donors or the body-politic. I could be mistaken, but I can't recall the body-politic funding a voter issue! OTOH, this particular issue was somewhat religious/moral in nature. One of my children told me that large numbers of CA members were upset and outspoken about the Church funding of the issue. And now I'm also curious to know if our programs to help folks change their sexual orientation have good results or not and hope to learn more on this when I go to Utah in a couple of weeks to take care of my daughter while during her radiation. I'll be visiting an old friend who is now one of the council of twelve and plan on asking him exactly where the Church is now on this matter.

Suma, I just reread your post again. Has anything of a chromosomal nature been identified? I do think it's totally appropriate that this issue be scientifically explored. For those who might want to change their orientation, medicine could prove to be the answer.
