Sotero spoke of the need for a President Obama to "engage . . . but not preach," and to abandon the notion that "if you are not with us you are against us." Brazil, the biggest South American power, may differ with the United States, but that doesn't mean they can't work together, he said.

That will be the first crucial step, showing the rest of the world that we can have differences and still maintain friendship and respect. That idea was totally trashed by Iraq. I remember an African ambassador at the UN in 2002-2003 who was asked if he felt intimidated about voting against the US invasion. No, he proclaimed, what are they going to do, invade us too?

A lot of voices on SI believed we could and would invade anyone who caused us trouble. That was the end of mutual respect between the US and much of the world. And the beginning of an era of isolation and impotence with many, since they didn't like us much but didn't fear our overextended bluster either. We haven't invaded anyone else, nor could we.
