If you are merely nostalgic about lazy Sundays but recognize the wrongness of blue laws, I retract my assertions. OK, you're going to stand by the charge of arrogance, so let me try it this way by stripping out the religious component. Here's my post. "Lane, remembering the days when blue laws were in effect, I've been wondering if the country as a whole might be better served by setting aside one day a week when almost all businesses close down. So that no religious group is offended, the day of the week could be voted on. This could become a day when the country could slow down and families and/or friends could all come together at one time for quality time. Such a day would bring a tremendous savings to the country in terms of energy costs, perhaps sufficient to preclude the building of additional power plants and possibly reducing our energy dependance on oil by as much as 10%. This could possibly become a day of national compassionate service, voluntary of course. Each community newspaper could publish a list of currently available projects going on in their locality, for ex. the addresses of current Habitat homes under construction. In the interest of efficiency, it would seem reasonable that the particular day become one of the two existing weekend days, or at least a Friday or a Monday, so that the public still has the traditional two contiguous days of 'time off'. All Church groups affected are free to choose to either continue their worship services on their traditional day of the week, or buck up, be good sports, and change their schedules to the new reality." If I made this suggestion to you, would you still think of me as 'arrogant' and a 'busybody meddler'?
