What ever amount of spending was going to come from an individual consumer that year would still come, even though it took place during a 6 day cycle instead of 7 day cycle. So I would bet that retailers and state coffers would end up in the same shape once the country adjusted to the new shopping schedules. There would probably be some reduction in total annual wages paid, esp. for young people with weekend, parttime jobs. Overall, though, if total sales stayed constant, just redistributed over one less shopping day, it might be that additional worker shifts are added to to each of the remaining six days. There would surely be a reduction in fast food sales, if they were forced to close all day, one day a week. But maybe kids would then eat one day a week of nutritious food, lol.Lack of opportunity to buy things that may be needed on a Sunday Surely that's easy to resolve. Essential businesses stay open, and the public learns to plan ahead. Staying with the economics of it, it's intriguing to speculate on the real savings to businesses that could happen. A mall would have reduced utilites, maintenance, and personnel costs. That might translate into reduced rents charged to each store which might translate into higher wages to each store employee. Employees working fewer hours, doing more sales per hour, but at a higher hourly wage could possibly be realized. If you read my post to Lane, I also speculated about the savings to the country in the form of reduced utility costs, gasoline usage, wear and tear on roads and other infrastructure. Maybe one day a week of true rest, relaxation, and family/friend recreation would even lower annual health expenditures. All in all, a considerable financial cost to indulge the sentiments of one group in society.
