Well John why don't we just shut down every idea anybody ever came up with then? Tesla was not in a position where "they couldn't get financing". They COULD get it, but no companies financing terms are good right now. This is ANY startup, not Tesla- because Tesla actually has MORE backers than most of the companies I am familiar with. But anyway these are the new car companies that have emerged since 1958 that I can imagine right off the bat: Honda, Subaru, Mazda, Hyndai, then in india Tata, Cherry in China etc.
