Hjalmar Schacht is down in the bunker, ready to explain to anyone who will listen that neither gold nor conventional money-as-debt fiat was available to him as the head of the German central bank in the 1930s. He managed to establish a monetary system without any "conventional" money and Germany recovered from that depression faster than the other western industrial states. He wrote some very good books about it, including "The Magic of Money," trans. from the German by Paul Erskine, Oldbourne Book Co., 1967. I highly recommend it. If you can't locate a copy, try an interlibrary loan. That's how I obtained it.
